The Skip

The sun was shining bright and beautiful, the temperature outside was a bit chilly but because of the suns bold rays shining down on us, there was no need for a jacket…it was a gorgeous afternoon. My right hand was holding tight on my daughters little hand as we were walking to our car in a bright open parking lot. I looked down at our mingled hands and then to the top of her head that was bopping up and down…because she was doing what she always does…she was skipping. There was this moment I encountered with the warm sun, the cool breeze of winter fading and spring previewing through the slight wind hitting our faces, that I looked down and saw a memory marker that will stay with me forever and I know will for my daughter as well…she may not remember the details of where we were or how old she was but there will be a time when she is an adult when the sun warms her at just the right temperature and the wind sings at just the right pitch that my daughter will remember joy, she will remember me, she will feel an overwhelming feeling of love at that exact moment that she is vaguely brought back to this afternoon walking out of our preschools Valentines party to our car on this perfect afternoon…it will probably just be a flicker, it may not last long, but it will happen one day and maybe on that day the gift of a love filled afternoon stroll to the car with her mom will bring a little skip to her step as an adult having a day full of adult stresses and adult problems…maybe that moment today will get her through a bad day 30 years from now. The heart never forgets, I know this because of all the moments I have had just like these throughout the years that gave me a little extra pep in my step that I needed to face the day…
